Toll Highest In History By United Press International More persons were killed in traffic during the Fourth of July weekend than during any previous holiday period in American history, a final tabulation showed yesterday. But the National Safety Council said the final toll of 722 actually reflected a lower death rate, based upon estimates of miles driven by vacationing motorists.

The number of traffic fatalities edged above the previous all-time high for any holiday, the 720 highway deaths recorded during the three-day Christmas weekend of 1965. It was far above the old mark for a Fourth of July holiday 577 in last year's three-day Independence Day holiday. The over-all accidental death toll of 1,089 also was a new high. The old mark was 955 in the Fourth of July holiday of 1966. The total included 213 drownings, 50 plane crash fatalities and 104 deaths from miscellaneous accidents.
